Jump of +26.5% y-o-y in feedstock usage in US for Biodiesel/Renewable diesel indicates continuing high production levels under RFS

Updated: Jun 3, 2024

The overall increase in feedstock usage hides the continued decline of Soyoil in the mix to tallow and Corn oil while Canola oil and Yellow Grease remains pretty steady. It is important to note that overall volume of Soyoil is still higher than Mar last year by +7.6% in line with increased Bio/RD production. EIA reports its data late and therefore this represents late winter mix as reflected by lower canola oil use in the mix which is still 1.2% higher than last year Mar while Corn oil is increasing in the mix and is +46% more than last year Mar. This EIA information should put more pressure on RINs and also Soyoil for the simple reason that we will see more tallow availability over next few summer months. Meanwhile Gasoil is taking a dive as predicted and seems we have broken the lower end of the curve that probably indicates we are headed much lower and will see Biodiesel margins under pressure. Putting that ugly gasoil chart on display.
